The Man Column: Craigslist cretins

Article by: Ethan Long

It seems, now more than ever, women think that we’re stupid. I mean, I’m sure there are a good amount of us who wouldn’t be able to find our way out of a paper bag, but still, we can’t let those who seem less than intelligent become the norm in our gender. [...]

The Project Runway designer speaks to students about his life, inspiration

Article by: Angela Bray

Unity Week at Suffolk had a huge pull Monday night with Project Runway’s second season contestant Nick Verreos who spoke at the C. Walsh Theater.

The Program Committee, Student Leadership and Involvement and Office of Retention Services brought Nick Verreos to speak to Suffolk students. After appearing on Project Runway’s second season, Verreos received both national and international attention, and is also known as a red carpet expert on E! Entertainment, TV Guide Network, and SoapNet.

“I have been invited to speak at Suffolk University and talk about my experience as a designer, entrepreneur, design company business owner–and of course ALL THINGS Project Runway, including my “Inside Dish” as a judge on the show–as well as a contestant, naturally!” Verreos previously posted on his blog. “My lecture will be part of Suffolk University’s Unity Week 2010/Multi-Cultural Summit.”

“It is going to be an awesome event,” said Sam Andea, Program Council Special Events/Traditions Chair, preceding the event. “He’s very excited to be here,” said Andea before she brought Verreos onto the stage.

China’s economy needs help too

“…China is losing a lot of money and its economy is slowly down-turning.”

Yasheng Huang, a professor of political economy and international management from the MIT Sloan School of Management came to Suffolk on Monday to talk about the dynamics and challenges of China’s economy.

The author of 2008’s Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics, Huang talked about China’s consumption decline, their rural economy and China’s biggest challenge: rebalancing their economy.

Many products in America have “Made in China” engraved on it. This is because China produces a lot of easy to make items, like shoes and shirts, and sells it to nations like the United States and countries in Western Europe.

Expert discusses radicalism, foreign policy

March 3, 2010 Campus, News 1 Comment

Article by: Jeff Fish and Tom Logan

“There needs to be a more realistic view of Islam”

Daveed Gartenstein-Ross is a short man with big credentials when it comes to the study of radical Islam, which is why Suffolk GOP and the Foreign Policy Forum partnered to host a roundtable discussion featuring the successful Middle Eastern expert. Gartenstein-Ross is the Foundation for Defense of Democracies Director for the Center for Terrorism Research, and has been published in numerous scholarly journals and newspapers including The Middle East Quarterly, The Washington Times, and The Wall Street Journal of Europe.

He’s also testified for the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and is the author of My Year Inside Radical Islam: A Memoir.

The discussion kicked off when Phillip Smyth asked about his experiences working with Al Harman, a radical Islam Charity linked to terrorist organizations. Gartenstein-Ross didn’t go into much detail mostly because he “feels bored” talking about his experiences. “One experience isn’t the end all be all experience.”

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in Jan., the Caribbean Student Network’s (CSN’s) 21st annual Cultural Fashion Show is dedicated to the victims of the tragedy.

Tickets are free, but the CSN is asking attendees to make a donation of their choice that will be equally divided through S.O.U.L.S. for five causes: Partners in Health, St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, Janbe: Bridges to Haiti, the Haitian Soccer Federation, and Food for the Poor.

Differing from past shows at the C. Walsh Theater, this year’s will take place in the Holiday Inn Ballroom on Saturday at 7 p.m. and is intended to be more upscale and formal.

The Journal brings home the bronze

The Suffolk Journal’s office walls are peppered with awards. In the 1970s, apparently, this paper was really, really good. However, we haven’t won a big award since 1999 and we haven’t won an Associated Collegiate Press annual National College Journalism Convention award since 1979.
Well, we finally brought one home. Last Sunday, at the ACP’s annual [...]
