‘Celebrating Diversity’ continues Unity Week

Students and faculty from around Suffolk University took part in “Celebrating Diversity: A group exhibition exploring ideas of disability,” a part of S.O.U.L.S’ annual Unity Week.  The exhibit, which took place on Tuesday, included an art gallery exhibit located in the Donahue lobby. The exhibit was sponsored by a combination of S.O.U.L.S, the Office of Disability Services, and the New England School of Art and Design.

Every year, S.O.U.L.S’ puts on their Unity Week celebration to encourage students to learn about everyone around them, no matter what background they might come from. The idea helps students learn to accept the world they live in. Tuesday’s event focused on disability in and around Suffolk University. Students from NESAD created artwork to be displayed at the exhibit.

Suffolk professor appearing on WGBH program

When WGBH first signed on in 1951, composer Aaron Copland told those listening in that it was “heartening to know that a station is now on the air broadcasting programs designed to be of interest to an adult mind.” Nearly 60 years later, the station is still broadcasting programs, though a format change at the end of last year caused the programming to shift from a music station to a station full of talk programs. One of these programs, the Callie Crossley Show, lives up to what Copland broadcast decades ago. The show covers subjects reaching from the day’s news to topics that are creating buzz around the area. On Friday afternoons, Crossley brings in Dr. Thomas Connolly, an associate English professor at Suffolk, as they go through hot topics from the week on a segment called “Ragtime.”

“Moment to moment, high falutin’ , hyper-intellectual discussion that slides down the banister into intellectual slapstick,” said Dr. Connolly, describing the segment. “We talk about the headline-grabbing stories of the week as they are treated by the tabloid press, the sensational press.”

Seriously Bent places second in Nationals

Improv comedy has been one of the main staples of funny business since the art form was invented.  Legendary comics such as Robin Williams and Stephen Colbert made appearances on the hit improv show Whose Line is it Anyways?, and many hit TV shows such as Reno 911! and Curb Your Enthusiasm rely on improv comedy to entertain their audiences.

For those not familiar with improv comedy, it’s a form of comedy where the actors create jokes as they go along, without scripts, props, or anything else other than their own creativity. Actors often create scenes by taking suggestions of random things (such as a place, occupation, famous person, etc.) from the audience, or by playing elaborate theatre games that turn into a scene.

Theater Department presents Spring Showcase

Students present plays about life, death, and rebirth

This week, from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14, the Suffolk Theater Department is running its annual Spring Showcase, a chance for theater students to realize their own creative visions brought to life on stage. All of the plays are student-directed and they all share the themes of life, death, and rebirth.

Reverse Transcription by Tony Kusher, an award winning playwright known best for Angels in America, is being directed by Bryan Daley. It’s an ensemble piece about six playwrights burying a good friend (also a playwright) who are forced to come to terms with their own mortality, as well as their own obscurity.
