GBH continues UK 82 into 2010

Article by: Matt McQuaid

Punk in Britain during the late 70s and early 80s, was one of those rare moments in rock and roll that cemented itself as a memorable mark on the history of the genre. Youth throughout the country were disenchanted with high unemployment, an increasingly tense cold war, and Thatcherism tightening it’s death grip on the English working-class. Kids throughout the country vented their rage by mutilating their hair and picking up guitars, and bands like The Exploited, Abrasive Wheels, Anti-Nowhere League, and Discharge went on to define the genre that became known as UK 82. One of the most memorable bands from that era, Charged GBH, is still going strong.

Despite late arrival, Cope Rocks

Article by: Thomas Logan

When you’re looking to hang out and relax, there’s nothing like folk music to set the mood. From straight-up folk acts like Nick Drake and Billy Bragg to more contemporary acts like Andrew Bird, it’s a genre that defines chillin’.  Citizen Cope, a musician that plays folk with traces of blues and reggae, played sold out shows at the Paradise Lounge from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27. One could easily see why their shows were sold out. To say the least, he really knows how to put on a show. When Citizen Cope (real name Clarence Greenwood) went on, the crowd simply went wild. Although there was no opening act, and the show started an hour late, Citizen Cope could really get the crowd to sing along, and his encore was very enticing.  Citizen Cope and his backing band were still able to put on a terrific performance despite the slow and boring start.

Harvey Milk to visit Boston during upcoming tour

Article by: Clay Adamczyk

The band Harvey Milk, (the sludge metal face melters,) not the late politician, has been off hiatus for almost four years now. Since then, they’ve successfully toured and have released, arguably their best album yet, Life…the Greatest Game in Town (Hydra Head, 2008). Drummer Kyle Spence took some time out to talk to the Journal about the upcoming nine show run with Coalesce, their new-album A Small Turn in Human Kindness (Hydra Head Records, 2010), and what the future has in store for Harvey Milk.

Suffolk Journal: How’s the band preparing for the tour?

Kiyle Spence: [laughs,] We haven’t really been, yet. Steve, the bass player, comes down to Athens tomorrow and we’re going to start rehearsing.

SJ: How do you anticipating the tour going?

KS: I’m not really sure what to expect. We never played with Coalesce before and don’t really know those guys. I imagine we’ll have a lot of fun. As far as what we’re going to play, that’s sort of up in the air. We have the idea of playing our new record (A Small Turn in Human Kindness), that won’t be out till April, start to finish, but we might only play a couple things off of it. We’re still trying to figure out how that’s going to bill.

Story of the Year back with ‘Constant’ release

Article by: Ashley Maceli

The post-hardcore band Story of the Year, is back with their fourth album The Constant (Epitaph, 2010), although it may not be an album to break them through once again. The band was best known in the early 2000’s for their singles “Until The Day I Die” and “Anthem of Our Dying Day,” which were huge hits, and with good reason. Unfortunately, their new album may not be a great comeback to some of their older more quality stuff.

The band overall is rather ordinary for rock music, with nothing special to their sound or appearance. Even though the band may be kind of “eh,” their music is still very enjoyable, but it can also be typical for the genre. For some people that might be enjoyable, but for most, this band is really nothing to get excited about, at least not anymore.

The Journal brings home the bronze

The Suffolk Journal’s office walls are peppered with awards. In the 1970s, apparently, this paper was really, really good. However, we haven’t won a big award since 1999 and we haven’t won an Associated Collegiate Press annual National College Journalism Convention award since 1979.
Well, we finally brought one home. Last Sunday, at the ACP’s annual [...]
