New magazine devoted to Gen Y launched

Article by: Shoshana Akins

Generation Y. Millennial Generation. Echo Boomers. This demographic can’t even pin down a name for itself, so how can anyone be expected to understand them?

Encompassed in this name-shifting group are those following Generation X, or those approximately 15-35 years old. Fresh, changing, and different than all its predecessors, Gen Y continues to be elusive to all its outsiders. Advertisers, manufacturers, and cultural commentators just want to understand what exactly is going on with them and how this budding generation can be reached. What do they eat? What are they attracted to? What kind of lifestyle do they lead? All of these questions are difficult for baby boomers and Generation X’s to answer due to the extreme changes in culture, entertainment, and society.

Enter The Next Great Generation. No, this is not yet another name for this demographic, but a new blog that is seeking to patch together the breadth of knowledge about Gen Y. Started by Boston-based advertising company, Mullen, The Next Great Generation (TNGG) is an honest and telling amalgamation of articles on topics pertaining to this generation, including opinions and observations on food, life, brands, and, most recently, sex. But the hook of this new medium is that all the staff is between the ages of 18 and 25. The writers, the staff, the editors, the managers. Everyone.

UMASS Law given the go-ahead

February 10, 2010 Boston, News No Comments

Article by: Ethan Long

Plans to create the first public law school in Mass. are underway, to the chagrin of many private law schools that fought against its formation.

According to the new plan, approved by the Mass. Board of Higher Education last Tuesday, Feb. 2, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth will acquire the Southern New England School of Law, currently a private institution, and form it into the state’s first public law school.

In 2004, Suffolk Law was joined by the New England School of Law and Western New England College of Law to fight the initial proposal. The three private law schools succeeded in halting UMASS’ plans in 2005, but last year a revised plan sprouted up, which restarted the process. … Continue Reading

Ugandan anti-gay bill fuels protest

Article by: Derek Anderson

A proposed anti-homosexual bill in Uganda stirred up LGBT activists in Boston enough to take action in a protest last Thursday night in front of the John F. Kennedy Federal Building. The rally, organized by Anti-Violence Project of Massachusetts and Join the Impact MA, protested an American fundamentalist’s homophobic teachings in Africa. A right-wing group called “The Family” was accused by the protestors to be linked to the draft of the anti-gay bill in Uganda.

The bill in Uganda threatens gays by convicting them for a minimum of a life sentence in prison. People who engage in homosexual acts more than once, have sex with a minor, or test positive for HIV may be executed. Even people who know about homosexual activities but do not report them can risk being imprisoned for three years. According to a CNN article, this “bill forbids the promotion of homosexuality, which, in effect, bans organizations working in HIV and AIDS prevention.” … Continue Reading

The Journal brings home the bronze

The Suffolk Journal’s office walls are peppered with awards. In the 1970s, apparently, this paper was really, really good. However, we haven’t won a big award since 1999 and we haven’t won an Associated Collegiate Press annual National College Journalism Convention award since 1979.
Well, we finally brought one home. Last Sunday, at the ACP’s annual [...]
