Nick Verreos star of Suffolk’s Unity Week

The Project Runway designer speaks to students about his life, inspiration

Unity Week at Suffolk had a huge pull Monday night with Project Runway’s second season contestant Nick Verreos who spoke at the C. Walsh Theater.

The Program Committee, Student Leadership and Involvement and Office of Retention Services brought Nick Verreos to speak to Suffolk students. After appearing on Project Runway’s second season, Verreos received both national and international attention, and is also known as a red carpet expert on E! Entertainment, TV Guide Network, and SoapNet.

“I have been invited to speak at Suffolk University and talk about my experience as a designer, entrepreneur, design company business owner–and of course ALL THINGS Project Runway, including my “Inside Dish” as a judge on the show–as well as a contestant, naturally!” Verreos previously posted on his blog. “My lecture will be part of Suffolk University’s Unity Week 2010/Multi-Cultural Summit.”

“It is going to be an awesome event,” said Sam Andea, Program Council Special Events/Traditions Chair, preceding the event. “He’s very excited to be here,” said Andea before she brought Verreos onto the stage.

Expert discusses radicalism, foreign policy

“There needs to be a more realistic view of Islam”

Daveed Gartenstein-Ross is a short man with big credentials when it comes to the study of radical Islam, which is why Suffolk GOP and the Foreign Policy Forum partnered to host a roundtable discussion featuring the successful Middle Eastern expert. Gartenstein-Ross is the Foundation for Defense of Democracies Director for the Center for Terrorism Research, and has been published in numerous scholarly journals and newspapers including The Middle East Quarterly, The Washington Times, and The Wall Street Journal of Europe.

He’s also testified for the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and is the author of My Year Inside Radical Islam: A Memoir.

The discussion kicked off when Phillip Smyth asked about his experiences working with Al Harman, a radical Islam Charity linked to terrorist organizations. Gartenstein-Ross didn’t go into much detail mostly because he “feels bored” talking about his experiences. “One experience isn’t the end all be all experience.”

Unity Week sweeps over Suffolk

The week in summary: What’s it all about?

Suffolk’s Unity Week continues to rock the university with events, discussions and cultural celebrations. The events kicked off last Saturday with the third annual Multicultural Summit, Respectful Confrontation: The Practice of Compassionate Engagement, which was presented by the Office of Diversity Services.

Unity Week annually organizes events consisting of speakers, entertainment, dialogues, classes, music, and food. The relationships of different groups are demonstrated to share diverse perspectives, cultures, and backgrounds.

Mix N’ Match on the Board of Trustees

Carol Sawyer Parks takes a seat as Interim Chairwoman while other Trustees resign

Carol Sawyer Parks, vice chairwoman of the Suffolk Board of Trustees and Boston socialite and philanthropist, will step in as interim chairwoman for the rest of the semester, until the Board can appoint a new chair. Parks is the daughter of the late Frank Sawyer, for whom Suffolk’s  Sawyer Business School, as well as the Sawyer Building, is named.

At last Wednesday’s board meeting, Parks was asked by the nominating committee to lead the now 30-member Board.
