Suffolk strikes a deal with MGH

Students get additional access to health care

The following letter was sent out to all students in a campus-wide email:

We are pleased to announce that the University has entered into an important agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which benefits all of our students and will provide additional access to care for students when the University’s Health & Wellness Services Office is closed during weekday evenings and on weekends.  In addition, our students will benefit from on-site access to an MGH physician at designated times during the normal operating hours of the University Health & Wellness Services.

MGH is recognized as one of the foremost medical institutions in the world and ranks among top hospitals for its high standard of patient care.  The program with MGH adds MGH physicians to the University’s Health & Wellness Services Office and integrates the hospital’s network of advanced health care to the services presently offered by our excellent Health & Wellness Program. … Continue Reading

How green is Suffolk?

See what measures Suffolk takes to make the campus more environmentally friendly…

  • Techno Trash – Special recycling bins that can be found in the Sawyer lounge as well as the computer labs in Sawyer and Donahue. You can dispose of tapes, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, and transparencies.
  • 150 Tremont, 10 West, and Miller Hall all now have “single stream” recycling. This is one bin in which students can place all recyclables without needing to sort them prior. This is to make recycling easier and more convenient.
  • Suffolk’s annual waste reduction competition normally takes place only in the fall, but this year will also be held during the Spring.
  • Organics recycling in the Donahue cafeteria – Allows diners to compost food instead of throwing it in with the trash. The composted food, along with the newly biodegradable cutlery, straws, and containers in the cafeterias, will go to a farm in Massachusetts to be sold as compost.
  • In & Toner Cartridges – If you are a staff member, live in the residence halls, or attend Suffolk you can now bring empty cartridges to the mail room where an outside company will take them free of charge.

KABUL - General Stanely McChrystal  said on Sunday that he hopes increased NATO forces in Afghanistan will destabilize the Taliban enough for the group to accept a peace deal, according to Reuters.  “As a soldier,  my personal feeling is that there has been enough fighting,” McChrystal said to the Financial Times.  Another idea regarding bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table  and their future  in running Afghanistan’s government was also raised in the interview.  ” I think any Afghans can play a role if they focus on the future, not the past.”  An international conference on Afghanistan will take place in London on Thursday.

BAGHDAD – The man known as “Chemical Ali,” Saddam Hussein’s cousin and a key player in his regime, was executed Sunday by hanging for genocide and crimes against humanity, according to the BBC. “The execution happened without any violations, shouting, or cries of  joy,” said an Iraqi government spokesperson.   Ali Hassan al-Majid was sentenced to death four times in the past  few years, and it was “important  to Iraqi Kurds to see him  convicted” of attacks on  ethnic Kurds in the late 1980s.  Three car bombs rocked Baghdad the same day, but it is not known if they were connected in any way to al-Majid’s execution.

MOSCOW - President Dmitry Medvedev announced on Sunday that Russia and the U.S. are close to ending negotiations on a new pact to reduce their arsenals of nuclear weapons, according to Al Jazeera. Medvedev said he is, “optimistic for the conclusion of the deal” which will succeed the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (Start), which expired last month. The rest of the details of the deal will be ironed out at a conference in Geneva next month.

Obama announces 30,000 more troops in Afghanistan

Last night President Obama addressed the nation on his plan for the conflict in Afghanistan. Obama plans to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan at the very beginning of 2010. After 18 months, the troops will be brought home. He also promised to bring all troops home from Iraq by 2011. Obama’s reasoning for sending more troops to Afghanistan, however, is because he believes the security of our country is at stake. “These are the three core elements of our strategy,” said Obama, a”a military effort to create the conditions for a transition, a civilian surge that reinforces positive action, and an effective partnership with Pakistan.” Obama hopes this will destroy the Taliban and al Qaeda and bring back peace. He made a point in his speech to address Afghanistan and mentioned that it was not America’s intention or interest to occupy the country. “America seeks an end to this era of war and suffering,” said Obama. “We will seek a partnership with Afghanistan grounded in mutual respect—to isolate those who destroy; to strengthen those who build; to hasten the day when our troops will leave; and to forge a lasting friendship in which America is your partner, and never your patron.”

The Journal brings home the bronze

The Suffolk Journal’s office walls are peppered with awards. In the 1970s, apparently, this paper was really, really good. However, we haven’t won a big award since 1999 and we haven’t won an Associated Collegiate Press annual National College Journalism Convention award since 1979.
Well, we finally brought one home. Last Sunday, at the ACP’s annual [...]
