Human Again

Michaelson tweaks sound on Human Again

Ingrid Michaelson’s fifth studio album, released last Tuesday, branches out from the classic indie, folk sound her fans have come to expect. Human Again takes the emphasis off the innocent ukulele melodies and cute lyrics, replacing them with faster beats and more dramatic narratives.

The first single off the album, “Ghost,” was released back in November. The song still features Michealson’s signature soft, slow beat but adds overwrought crescendos and intense vocals. These new elements create a vibe that diverges from her cutesy indie hits “The Way I Am” from Girls and Boys (2006) and “You and I” from Be Ok (2008). Read more »

10 movies to watch for this year

Brian Holak, Journal Contributor

The Vow, February 10: What can be manlier than a story of unfailing commitment in the face of tragedy? Nothing. Sure, these other movies have action and adventure, but this one has heart (and Channing Tatum). After a car accident, Leo’s (Tatum) wife Paige wakes up with severe memory loss, so Leo does all he can to win back her heart.

The Hunger Games, March 23: Fans looking to fill the void left from the ending of the Harry Potter series need look no further than The Hunger Games. Based on the first book in the popular Hunger Games series, the movie focuses on an oppressive post-apocalyptic world in which select children are forced to fight to the death in the annual hunger games. With a cool, exciting concept and unexpected grit, this movie is sure to shoot to the top of the charts.

Suffolk to start new chapter

By Jeff Fish, Ethan M. Long, and Derek J. Anderson

One week from today, Suffolk’s new president, James McCarthy will begin his tenure at the university more than a year after David Sargent retired. The Journal spoke with McCarthy in a phone interview Monday about his plans for Suffolk moving forward.

“I think on a general level what I need to do is make sure that we preserve all those wonderful things about Suffolk’s history and its mission, and we enhance those as much as we possibly can,” said McCarthy.

“We have to reconfirm who we are, what our mission is, we have to ask what our focus should be,” he said. “The first thing on my agenda is launching and then quickly completing a strategic planning process so that we answer some of those fundamental questions – set the direction that we should follow.”

‘Wordly:’ quirky art at NESAD

Presented by the Suffolk University Art Gallery at the New England School of Art and Design (NESAD) is “Wordly,” a solo exhibition of sculptures, drawings and installations by Arthur Henderson.

Quirky art creates a fun, bright atmosphere from the main and hallway areas of the gallery. Pieces are composed of simple materials like paint, silly putty, plaster, steel, wood, cement, clay, and plastic, as well as other things like urethane foam, polystyrene and resin.

The exhibition demonstrates craftsmanship and style similar to that of Henderson’s “Construction” exhibit which was curated by James Hull and featured in the gallery in 2009.

Among the works are simple everyday objects like a wheel, an axe and a plunger, accompanies by works of different sizes, unique painted details and images, and popping colors.

Alex Mellion

Sophomore Cam Kelley has stopped 308 of 364 shots for the Rams this season.

While the Suffolk hockey team has fallen on some tough times this season, they have had great performances from several underclassmen on the roster, and one of their most consistent performers has been sophomore goaltender Cam Kelley.

Originally from Brighton, Kelley is the only goaltender on the roster to have played in all 15 games this season, and although the team has been less than spectacular, Kelley has been solid, stopping 308 of 364 shots while posting a .846 save percentage.

Suffolk University’s women’s basketball team has continued their best impression of the 1995 Chicago Bulls, with a 12-5 record on the season. Winning eight of their last 11 games, the Lady Rams are just one game behind Emmanuel for the top spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

It’s been a season where the contests are either nail-biting affairs or blowouts for Suffolk, with several of their games decided by six points or less as well as more than a few out double-digit victories under their belts. Read more »

Bruins look to continue first-half success

CJ Haddad

Journal Staf

Since the Boston Bruins captured their sixth Stanley cup championship and their new banner was raised to the rafters at TD Garden, the hype in Boston about the 2011-2012 season has been enormous.

As previous teams have shown, it can be difficult to repeat as Stanley Cup Champs. Since 2000, 11 team captains have hoisted Lord Stanley about their shoulders.  Up to the halfway point in the season the Bruins are showing that they have picked up right where they left off last season. The black and gold find themselves atop the Northeast Division, and with one game remaining versus the Washington Capitals, tied for first in the Eastern Conference with the surprise New York Rangers (64 points).

Everyone recall the miracle catch? You know. The gum on the helmet, one handed pull down, angels in the outfield grab by New York Giants wide receiver, David Tyree.

It was nearly four years ago in what has proved to be the most upsetting moment in any Super Bowl New England fans have ever seen. That one play, single-handedly ruined the Patriots “fairy tale ending” to an undefeated season.
